Choose a Plastic Surgeon
So, you’ve decided that plastic surgery interests you. Where do you go from here?
Human nature dictates that we are going to rely on people with whom we are the most comfortable. We believe the personal connection between our patients and our staff vitally important. Equally important though is the experience and qualifications of your surgeon.
Did you know that any medical doctor can take a course on how to perform a procedure and call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon“? We feel that when choosing a surgeon it is important that they are members of The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board-certified plastic surgeons have specialized in plastic surgery with extended medical training and take continuing education to maintain their skills. They are well prepared to manage patient outcomes.
The mission of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc.® (www.abplsurg.org) is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and recertification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.
Only surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery can be members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (www.plasticsurgery.org). The mission of ASPS is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery. The society advocates for patient safety, such as encouraging its members to operate in surgical facilities that have passed rigorous external review of equipment and staffing.
Only members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons may display the ASPS logo. This symbol of excellence in plastic surgery is what to look for when deciding on a surgeon. It tells you that you are choosing a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
