Bounce Back Better With Reconstructive Surgery
3 min read
Recovering from a severe illness or injury can be a painstaking process.
Healing can be a frustratingly slow and strenuous process, and some diseases leave visible scars, which all take a heavy toll on patients’ self-esteem.
Patients may not like the new appearance they have after struggling with an illness.
In these cases, Piedmont Plastic Surgery offers reconstructive surgery offers patients a chance to look better as they focus on recovering.
Look Better, Feel Better: Recovering After Cancer
Cancer treatment can often require drastic surgical procedures, such as a mastectomy or tumor removal, that leave visible effects for years to come. The debilitating effects of chemotherapy and radiation also affect appearance.
It’s normal for patients to not feel or look like themselves during their cancer recovery.
In some instances, reconstructive surgery may be used to restore body contours. Recovering from breast reconstruction can take several weeks, and the result may not be entirely what patients expect.
Reconstructed breasts may feel different, and there will always be some visible scarring. But for many women, it’s a welcome start at restoring their appearance.
Skin Cancer
One of the most common types of cancer, skin cancer can affect nearly anyone. Lesions, growths or even tumors can form and need to be removed, which can often leave scars or disfigurements.
Reconstruction for these cases involve a process known as a local flap, where healthy nearby tissue is repositioned over the skin cancer lesion wound.
Healing will take several weeks as tissues position themselves and incisions heal. It’s crucial to avoid excessive sun exposure during recovery for better results.
Injuries, Trauma, and Cosmetic Concerns
Reconstructive surgery may also be used to help minimize breasts that are too large and cause discomfort or correct disfigurements from injuries.
Earlobe Tear Repairs
Over time, earlobes may stretch in a way that’s irreversible or even tear from holding too much weight. Getting ear modifications like ear plugs that stretch the earlobe out could also leave permanent stretching that cannot return to normal.
Earlobe tear repair surgery restitches the skin back together using sutures. The skin may naturally absorb the sutures, or need to be removed after healing. Recovery typically takes a few days.
Breast Reduction
Women who have breasts that are naturally too large for their frames can suffer from pain and discomfort.
Breasts that are too large can impede physical movement, affect what clothes women can wear, and affect nearly any area of life.
With breast reduction surgery, an incision is used to remove excess breast tissue and reshape breasts. It’s also combined with a breast lift surgery to tighten the new breasts and remove any extra skin and tissue.
Recovery can take about six weeks to fully complete. Patients will need to wear a compression or tube top during the first few weeks to help the new breast shape fully settle and facilitate healing.
Once healing is through, results are designed to last a long time.
