Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Men who struggle with overdeveloped or enlarged breasts can often feel embarrassed or insecure about their appearance.

Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery, is a common cosmetic procedure that removes excess breast tissue to enhance the definition of a man’s chest for a masculine and toned appearance.

Candidates

In most cases, gynecomastia can develop because of hormones, genetics, obesity, or the use of certain medications like steroids. Men who struggle with gynecomastia may experience emotional discomfort and avoid participating in certain physical activities. Gynecomastia surgery can address the following conditions:

  • Localized breast fat
  • Puffy nipples
  • Excess or sagging breast tissue
  • Feminine chest appearance

Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. This procedure takes between one and two hours to complete.

Liposuction

In some instances where excess fatty tissues are the primary cause of gynecomastia, liposuction is performed to remove fat from the breasts. A small incision is made, and a thin, hollow tube is inserted into the fatty tissue. Fat is then extracted from the chest creating a toned and even chest contour.

Incisional Technique

Gynecomastia that results in an accumulation of excess fat and breast tissue will require both liposuction and surgical removal. An incision will be made along the lower edge of the areolas, and excess glandular tissue and fat are extracted from the chest to create a more masculine shape.

Combination of Liposuction and Incisional Technique

In more severe cases where gynecomastia is a result of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, a combination of liposuction and the incisional technique may be the best option. Liposuction is used to extract excess fat while breast tissue and skin are surgically removed. This procedure can also reposition the nipples and areolas for a more attractive and symmetrical appearance.

Recovery and Results

You may experience temporary pain, bruising, swelling, and soreness following your procedure. You will be asked to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks after your surgery to help reduce swelling. Patients may return to light physical activities within one week following your procedure. Strenuous activities that involve excessive movement must be avoided for at least four weeks. Gynecomastia surgery can result in a flatter and more masculine looking chest with long-lasting results.

If you wish to receive further care and treatment after your surgery, you can request to spend the night at the Comfort Cottage with a nurse available to help you.
